Commissioned Memory
Book
The design corresponds with the multiplicity of layers and perspectives offered by the project. It reflects on the multiple time planes involved: our contemporary approach, the 1960s, and the era of the Holocaust.
The layers of the cover with the ratio of the cut-outs based upon the artworks evoke the almost archaeological nature of the research. They reflect the uncovering of the layers of memory and the discovery of artworks that had sunk into oblivion a few years after their creation, remaining hidden in museum storages ever since.
The red color of the book cover’s deepest layer originates from a 1965 painting that shows the prisoners of the concentration camp; it points to the gradual emergence of the victims’ voice and perspective within, as well as parallel to, the antifascist narrative.
